A calligraphy workshop is the perfect experience for visitors to Japan. Not only can you learn to write your name in kanji characters, but you’ll receive a unique glimpse into Japanese culture and receive a personalized souvenir to take home with you. Below is an overview of this experience.
During your calligraphy class, we will select several kanji characters that correspond to your name based on sound and meaning. You can choose the ones that speak to you. But what does it mean when we say “kanji characters that correspond to your name”? Well, it can mean a few different things!
For example, if your last name is “Green,” one method to narrow down some kanji options is to find and write a kanji character that has the same meaning in Japanese. In this case, the meaning will be the same, but the sound will be different. (Green = 緑, pronounced “midori”)
Another option is to write your name based on sound. This will change the meaning, but keep the sound. (倶鈴 means “together” and “bell” but is pronounced “gurin”)

When a name is derived from a source without a direct meaning (especially in the case of first names), it can be difficult to find a Japanese name (character) with the same meaning. Therefore, we look for kanji characters based on sound.
The sound-based method in generally used in our workshop.
Adapting Western Names to Japanese Sounds
There are some limitations to the sounds that can be expressed with Japanese kanji. For example, Japanese does not have “th” or “see” sounds. But don’t worry! When we have a name without an exact corresponding sound, we can break down the sound into equivalent vowels and consonants. Then you can write kanji for each of these sounds.
Also, if your name is long (five or more kanji characters), 90 minutes is probably not enough time to learn to write it. In this case, we will consult with you in advance about using an abbreviated form or perhaps only using your surname instead.
Personalized Calligraphy Options
Some people choose to write something other than their own name—this is fine! If you love Japanese manga, we can teach you to write the names of your favorite characters. Or if you have an appreciation for traditional Japanese culture, you can learn to write a Zen phrase. Some guests have written favorite phrases, words, or even written their pet’s names in kanji!
This session is conducted in small groups, so we’re happy to customize your experience. If you have something specific you’d like to learn to write in Japanese calligraphy, please feel free to consult with us in advance.
