Enjoy a taste of Japanese Tradition on your journey

Introduction to Japanese Language and Kanji
The experience begins with a brief introduction to kanji, hiragana, and katakana—the three writing systems used in Japanese. You’ll also gain insight into the unique features of kanji, which was originally adopted from China around the 5th century and adapted to the Japanese language.

Learning How to Use a Brush
Next, you will learn how to hold and use a brush—it’s not as simple as holding a paintbrush! To get accustomed to writing with a brush, the first practice will involve drawing straight lines with the proper form and assembling them to write simple kanji characters.

Choosing and Practicing Your Name in Kanji
There are tens of thousands of kanji characters! Your instructor will help you narrow down a few to represent your name based on sound and meaning, but you will select the ones that resonate with you. After that, you’ll practice writing your name in your chosen kanji.

Writing Your Name on a Board as a Souvenir
Once you feel confident with the brush strokes, you will write your name on a traditional shikishi board. This will be your souvenir to take home and remember your unique calligraphy experience with us!
